Believe and Receive

As Christian Scientists, we place tremendous emphasis on spiritual healing, in keeping with the word of our Lord Jesus Christ. While addressing his disciples, Jesus said: "These signs shall follow them that believe... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." (Mark 16: 17-18).

Here, the word "hand" is used metaphorically, as in the text, the hand of the Lord is exalted. This truth expresses spiritual power. Otherwise, the healing could not have been done spiritually. These sentiments are found across various areas of scripture, such as in John 17:20 and in John 14:12.

Our beloved leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in 'Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures' (p.412:16-20.31-2): "To prevent disease or to cure it, the power of Truth, of divine Spirit must break the dream of the material senses. To heal by argument, find the type of the ailment, get its name, and array your mental plea against the physical. The Scientist knows that that there can be no hereditary disease since matter is not intelligent and cannot transmit good or bad intelligence to man, and God, the only Mind, does not produce pain in matter."

Sometime last year, I noticed a small swelling in my prostrate area. I never paid it any mind until it began to grow bigger and painful. Fear came over me when I remembered that my father had died from prostrate cancer. It was then that I started to pray about the condition. But despite my knowing the truth of my being, as our Leader taught, the swelling and pain persisted.

One night I was awakened by a sharp, nagging pain, and then I realized I really had to work deeper. I vehemently denied the disease and affirmed that God, infinite Spirit, infinite good was all, and that there was none beside Him. I affirmed I was His perfect, spiritual child and that my inheritance was from Him. I affirmed that there was no life, substance, and intelligence in matter (ibid, p. 468:9-10).

I continued praying in this way for some 30 minutes or so, and finally said out loud: "This is the end of this matter." The pain stopped and the swelling went down immediately. I almost couldn’t believe what
had happened, but I rejoiced that my name was written in heaven, as Jesus said. (Luke10:20)

I am very grateful for Christian Science.
