Almost all Christians end their prayer with these words: in Jesus’s name; but very few really
understand what it means to pray in Jesus’s name. In John 16:24 Jesus says, Hitherto have ye
asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
At the gate Beautiful in Acts 5:1-7, Peter and John healed a man in the name of Jesus, but the
seven sons of Sceva were wounded by a man they tried to heal in Jesus’s name. Peter and John
had received power when the Holy Spirit descended on them; they had demonstrated the Christ-
spirit in their lives, but the sons of Sceva had not.
In conclusion, if we are not following after righteousness, faith, humility, love, patience, meekness,
and purity; if we are not showing forth the fruits of the Spirit, then we are not asking in Jesus’ name, no matter how much we use the phrase, our prayer will be ineffective. As Jesus said: By their fruits, ye shall know them.
